Restoring a Historic Derbyshire Pub for a New Chapter
The Hurt Arms is a historic pub located in the Derbyshire village of Ambergate, within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
Following a prolonged closure after severe flooding, the operators of The Hurt Arms, Morwood Hotel Collection, took the opportunity to purchase the property outright from the brewery and invest in its long-term future. Alongside extensive flood defence works, the project presented an opportunity to reimagine the interior, creating a venue that respected the building’s heritage while offering a fresh and welcoming experience for both locals and visitors.
SPG Interior Design was appointed to develop the interior concept, detailed design, and support the project through to completion.
The Brief
The project formed part of a wider programme of works to secure the long-term future of the building following severe flooding, including flood defence measures and refurbishment of the function suite, external spaces and guest accommodation.
Flood resilience was a key consideration throughout the design process, with measures including raised floor levels, flood barriers to external doorways, relocated electrical services and durable low-level finishes designed to withstand future flood events.
The design needed to balance several key objectives:
- Respect the character of the historic coaching inn.
- Create a contemporary hospitality environment without losing warmth and familiarity.
- Celebrate the building’s local heritage and surroundings.
- Incorporate flood-resilient materials without compromising the customer experience.
The Design
Drawing inspiration from the surrounding Derbyshire landscape, local industrial heritage, and the building’s own history, the interior combines traditional pub character with subtle Scandinavian and Mid-Century influences.
Historic photographs, artefacts and locally inspired artwork were incorporated throughout the venue, while references to the surrounding countryside and textile industry were woven into the finishes, lighting and detailing.
The project progressed from concept development through detailed design, including layouts, finishes, furniture, decorative lighting, fixed seating, artwork, and styling. Regular site involvement throughout construction helped coordinate design decisions, respond to site conditions and support contractors in delivering the overall vision.
A key feature of the design is the bespoke hammered copper bar top. Once a familiar feature in traditional pubs but rarely seen in contemporary hospitality interiors, the material creates a strong link to the building’s heritage while bringing a classic finish into a more modern setting.
The Outcome
The Hurt Arms reopened in spring 2026 as a revitalised destination for both local residents and visitors to the area.
The finished interior combines the warmth and familiarity of a traditional country pub with a contemporary hospitality experience, creating a venue that feels true to its heritage while appealing to a broad customer base. Carefully curated artwork, bespoke design features, and considered material selections help tell the story of both the building and its surroundings.
Delivered from concept through to final installation and styling, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design, collaboration, and attention to detail can transform a complex brief into a successful hospitality destination.
